Police are appealing for information after a burglary at the home of a 96-year-old man in Wallasey during Monday night.
On Tuesday morning it was discovered entry had been forced to the house in Norwood Road, with a spade used to smash the living room window.
Cash and debit cards were stolen along with food from the pensioner's fridge.
Forensic inquiries are ongoing.
Wirral Detective Inspector Justin Danher said: "This was a despicable crime against an elderly gentleman who has understandably been left extremely distressed.
"Stealing an item from the fridge is unusual - but this detail may prompt someone to identify the offender.
"I would urge anyone with information on those responsible to contact police and help us to bring them to justice."
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111.
