A GROUP of green-fingered gardening enthusiasts attended the official opening of allotments in Thingwall.

Wirral West MP Margaret Greenwood cut the ribbon at the launch, which followed more than two years' hard work by local residents and councillors who had battled to find a site and funding for the project.

Ms Greenwood said: "This allotment project has gone from strength to strength and I would like to congratulate all those involved.

"Allotments provide an excellent resource for people to grow their own food and get in touch with the natural world.

"There is a real sense of community at Thingwall allotments, and people of all ages are involved.

"It was an honour to open the allotments and I look forward to seeing it develop successfully over the coming years."

The allotment has 42 plots in total and two schools are running forest schools on the main site where children can explore the natural world. It recently received a £42,000 Health and Wellbeing grant.

Cllr Mike Sullivan said: “When we came across this particular site it was very overgrown, with sections of grass over four foot tall. A huge amount of effort has gone in to transform the site.”
