A WIRRAL hospital consultant has won a prestigious award for her compassion and dedication to the health service.

Gastroenterologist Dr Bev Oates was named clinical Leader of the Year in the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards 2015.

The  is the largest celebration of healthcare excellence in the UK, highlighting the most innovative and successful people and projects in the sector.

Dr Bev Oates has worked for Wirral University Hospital Trust for 10 years. Her team has performed more than 15,500 endoscopic procedures in the last year.

This is an increase of 8% on the previous year and the Trust is predicting a further increase in the service of up to 10% next year.

Testimonies from both staff and patients describe Dr Oates' high levels of compassion, commitment and support and speak highly of the relationships she develops with staff, patients and relatives.

Earlier this year she granted a dying patient's wish to experience fresh air and sunshine by accompanying the patient outdoors with drips, oxygen and medical interventions which is an example of the her dedication and compassion towards her patients.

The judging panel for the HSJ Awards said: “The winner has demonstrated significant achievements.

"They exemplify that great teams have great leaders, who can make a real difference for team performance. Our winner has consistently demonstrated compassion to their patients who have always come first."

Dr Evan Moore, medical director at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, said: "Dr Oates has displayed significant achievements in supporting patients with their care.

“She has been instrumental in integrating, standardising, modernising and expanding the endoscopy unit at Arrowe Park Hospital, ensuring the best possible service and care is provided to our patients.

“Whilst highly patient centred in her approach, she recognises the importance of teaching and learning both personally and in developing doctors and nurses of the future.

“Dr Oates has been through an incredible journey as service lead and this national award recognition is truly deserved.”
