A CAMPAIGN which aims to boost the level of household recycling across Wirral has been launched.

The Good To Know campaign aims to remind people about the wide range of items from all around the home that can be put in the grey wheelie bin to be recycled.

Currently, around 36% of all domestic waste collected in Wirral is recycled, but the Council – alongside other Merseyside authorities – has committed to increasing that so that at least half of all household waste is recycled by 2020.

This is in line with current national targets.

An information pack, including a handy leaflet setting out room by room which items are okay to go in the grey recycling bin, is being distributed to every household in the next few weeks.

Cllr Bernie Mooney, cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: "We are really proud in Wirral of our commitment to maintaining an attractive local environment; indeed, it is one of our key priorities for the next five years.

"We know that our residents have a very strong appetite for – and commitment to – recycling.

"Since the dedicated grey bin was introduced, our recycling rate has been very good and we have been able to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.

“However, this rate has levelled out in recent times and we identified a need to remind people that there are more things around the house that can be recycled than perhaps they realised.

"If we can get people recycling more bathroom items, like shampoo bottles or toothpaste boxes for example, we believe this could play a big part in pushing us closer to our stated target of 50% recycled waste by 2020."
