A SUSPECTED cannabis farm was uncovered by police following a fire at a house in Wallasey.

Emergency services were called to Poulton Road on Friday night, following reports of a fire at a house.

Firefighters tackled the fire while police officers closed part of Poulton Road.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters entered the house and found 40 suspected cannabis plants in two upstairs rooms.

It is believed the blaze may have been caused by a heat lamp falling onto combustible materials.

The house was cordoned off by police for crime scene investigators.

No-one was inside the house, which was extensively damaged inside, and neighbouring properties were not affected.

Police enquiries are ongoing.

Watch manager Joe Cunliffe, of Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service Incident Investigation Team, said: "It is suspected that the fire started as a result of a heat lamp falling on to combustible materials.

"Buildings where cannabis farms are located can pose a real risk to firefighters.

"Fires caused by cannabis farms can also be a risk to members of the public, as they can easily spread to other properties."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
