POPULAR television and stage actress Judy Cornwell was taken to hospital after collapsing before a scheduled performance at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton.

The star - whose plethora of roles include that of Hyacinth Bucket's sister Daisy in hit BBC comedy Keeping Up Appearances - collapsed outside The Queens Hotel in New Brighton as she made her way to play the lead in the opening matinee performance of Agatha Christie’s classic A Murder Is Announced on Wednesday afternoon.

News of the much-loved 75-year old star’s illness was announced over the pre -show tannoy.

Her place in the performance was bravely taken by stalwart actress Cara Chase.

The theatre is waiting for an update on the star’s condition.

The 12-strong cast from Middle Ground Theatre Company carried on and the audience loved it.

David McKenzie, manager of the Floral Pavilion told the Globe: "She was taken to hospital and we are waiting to hear how she is doing.

"As soon as we heard about Judy's illness, we turned our attention to the understudy, who did a fantastic job.

"We would like to thank the audience for being so understanding and appreciative and are still waiting for news on Judy’s condition."
