A FREE uniform recycling project is underway in Wirral giving parents a helping hand with what would otherwise be an expensive purchase.

Parents can collect free uniforms for Birkenhead schools this Thursday from Wirral Christian Centre thanks to the scheme set up by Wirral FUSS (Free Uniforms for Secondary Schools) and FUPS (Free Uniforms for Primary School).

The project, where parents donate uniforms they can no longer use, was originally started by St Luke’s Methodist Church in Hoylake, with donation points across the borough, including Moreton, Tranmere, Bebington, Birkenhead and Oxton Gateway.

Petra Dye-Davies, who is involved in the project, said: “We mostly have primary uniform but also some Woodchurch High and Ridgeway uniforms. Parents can come and collect free uniforms. They can call us to check stock or just turn up on the day.

“If anyone is in urgent need of uniform prior to the open day, they can call me to make an appointment to come in.”

Petra added: “I am still sorting out all the donated uniform stock that has come in – 140kg of clothes that would have gone to landfill.

“This project is much-needed and proving really necessary and popular to our community. Just in the week before the schools started back, we gave out more than 100 items of clothing.”

Parents can visit the FUSS website where they an order uniforms online and collect them from their nearest hub, or call Petra on 0151 200 0815.

The open day takes place at Wirral Christian Centre, on Woodchurch Road from 12pm until 2pm on Thursday, October 29.
