A MEMORIAL service has taken place to mark the 71st anniversary of an aeroplane crash in Wirral that saw 24 US servicemen die.

The US B-24 Liberator bomber crashed in a field in Birkenhead, killing everyone on board, on October 18, 1944.

On Sunday, more than 50 people took part in a service paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the disaster.

It was held on the North Cheshire Trading Estate, in Prenton and organised by CrossFit GRB, which is based nearby.

Deputy mayor Pat Hackett, pictured below, was in attendance along with Doug Darrock, from Fort Perch Rock, who gave great insight into the crash which his father witnessed in 1944.

Adam Morrison, from the gym, said: “The day was a huge success with more than 50 people paying us a visit.

“We all took a walk down to the memorial to pay our respects, give two minutes silence and lay a wreath.

“The deputy mayor gave a little speech of thanks for all those who attended and noted that he was proud our community had come together on this occasion so close to Remembrance Sunday.”

To commemorate the anniversary, staff at CrossFit GRB created a workout in honour of those who died.

Hundreds of people witnesses the crash in 1944.

The aircraft exploded in mid-air coming across Wirral with the wreckage landing around Prenton and Landican.

There was a smell of petrol on board before the aircraft exploded as it flew from Northern Ireland to Tibenham in Norfolk.
