WITH the clocks due to go back this weekend and the winter weather fast approaching, Wirral's road safety team are reminding pedestrians and cyclists of the importance of being visible when out and about.

Every year people are killed or seriously injured because they were simply not seen by drivers.

Not only does it get darker earlier at this time of year and stay darker for longer, the weather conditions also add to the problems.

However, there are things that can do to help themselves safer.

The message from Wirral Council’s Road Safety Team is to 'be bright, be seen' and increase your visibility to other road users.

Cllr Stuart Whittingham, cabinet member for highways and transportation, says there are a number of ways in which pedestrians can improve their visibility, it’s not only about bright clothing.

He said: “Special high-visibility tabards can be bought cheaply from many retailers, or even fluorescent armbands worn over coats or other clothing can be helpful.

“Bags in bright colours or with high-visibility strips are another alternative – and if none of these appeal, then you can buy stickers to go on bags or coats which will also help visibility.

“What is important to remember, however, is that if it is really dark then any clothing, armbands or other items must be reflective rather than just bright or fluorescent.

“Drivers also need to be aware of their responsibilities at this time of year too. They should drive considerately and reduce their speed to meet the traffic and weather conditions.

"They need to keep their lights in good working order and used them when visibility is poor during the daytime, while being careful not to dazzle other road users. By taking a bit more care, they can make a major contribution to reducing the numbers of casualties on our roads.”

The council has teamed up with Halfords in Bromborough, who are offering a 10% discount on bicycle lights to anyone who says they are part of the 'Be Bright Be Seen' campaign.

Other pieces of advice for people to remember at this time of year are:

  • Always cross the road at pedestrian crossings wherever possible. If there isn’t a crossing nearby, cross beneath a street light so you can be clearly seen by oncoming motorists

  • During the hours of darkness, cycles must have front and rear lights lit and must be fitted with a red reflector. Indeed, it’s an offence to cycle at night without a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back.
