DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Constable Dave Phillips have released four people on bail pending further enquiries.

Three women aged 19, 34 and 59, along with a 39-year old man, all from Wallasey, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and questioned at police stations in Merseyside.

Last night Clayton Ronald Williams, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey, was charged with the murder of PC Phillips, attempted wounding against PC Birkett, burglary and aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

Phillip Stuart, aged 30 , of Mayfair Court, Oxton, was charged with aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and burglary.

They will both appear at Wirral Magistrates Court this morning.

Constable Phillips was struck by a stolen Mitsubishi L200 Challenger after deploying a tyre deflator stinger in a bid to bring the vehicle to a halt during a high-speed chase.

The car was later found abandoned in Corbyn Street, Wallasey at 2.55am.

Colleagues of PC Phillips tried to save his life before he was rushed to hospital, but he died shortly after arrival.

A Home Office post-mortem examination said the officer died from internal injuries suffered in the impact with the vehicle.
