AN 18-year-old has been charged with the murder of Wirral police officer David Phillips.

Clayton Ronald Williams, 18, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey, is charged with the murder of PC Phillips, attempted wounding against PC Birkett, burglary and aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

Phillip Stuart, 30, of Mayfair Court, Oxton, is charged with aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and burglary.

They will both appear at Wirral Magistrates Court tomorrow, Thursday.

Constable Phillips was struck by a stolen Mitsubishi L200 Challenger after deploying a tyre deflator stinger in a bid to bring the vehicle to a halt during a high-speed chase.

The car was later found abandoned in Corbyn Street, Wallasey at 2.55am.

His colleagues tried to save his life before he was rushed to hospital, but he died shortly after arrival.

A Home Office post-mortem examination said the officer died from internal injuries suffered in the impact with the vehicle.
