FOUR people are in custody after a day of intense police activity across Wallasey and Birkenhead following the killing of PC David Phillips.

Two women - a 19-year-old and 34-year-old, both from Wallasey - were held on Tuesday night on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They are being questioned at police stations on Merseyside today.

It comes less than 24 hours after two men were arrested on suspicion of the policeman's murder.

The pair aged 18 and 30 years from Oxton and Wallasey remain in police custody this morning,

A massive police operation was underway in Wirral on Tuesday.

A house was searched in Eastcroft Road, Wallasey, with police removing items as part of the inquiry.

Halcyon Road was closed off, near the estate agency from where a red Mitsubishi pick-up truck which struck PC Phillips was stolen was closed.

A large green tarpaulin had been placed across the front of the shop Oxton Estates while forensic experts carried out their investigations.

Corbyn Street in Wallasey - where the stolen truck was abandoned - remained cordoned off and a heavy police presence was visible.

34-year-old father-of-two PC Phillips was killed trying to stop burglars escaping in the Mitsubishi they had taken from the estate agency in the early hours of Monday morning.

He died from internal injuries, a post-mortem examination found.

Constable Phillips leaves behind wife, Jen, and daughters Abigail, aged seven, and Sophie, aged three.

A book of condolence has been opened at Wallasey Town Hall.

Police still want to hear from anyone who may have information that could help their investigation.
