MORE than 25,000 motor enthusiasts turned out for Birkenhead’s Festival of Transport at the weekend.

Organisers described the event as a “fantastic” occasion.

Among the attractions were steam engines, a dog show and numerous tractor engines.

Ken Fretwell, chairman of Birkenhead Lions, told the Globe: “It was a fantastic day. I would say we had more than 25,000 people turn up over the two days and we raised about £18,000.

“I would say the highlight was the entertainment. We had some fantastic entertainers including Scratch, a brass band quintet from the Royal College of Music in Manchester.

“They went down really well as did the steam engines and the tractor engines and the dog show. There’s nothing really that shines out because I think it all shone.

“We were very lucky with the weather because if it had happened today, we would have been in dire straits.”

Ken told the Globe the event will return again in 2016 and appealed for more people to join Birkenhead Lions.

He said: “As chairman of the committee that ran it, thanks to the people of Birkenhead and the people who live around the park for supporting us.

“If anybody wants to join the Lions and to be part of this event, contact me.”

Money raised during the event will help to fund next year’s Transport Festival, with donations also going to a number of good causes across Wirral.

Globe photographer Paul Heaps was on hand to capture some of the weekend's events.
