A WIRRAL village came up with the best idea baah none to celebrate its heritage at the weekend.

People visiting Eastham on Saturday were treated to the spectacle of the old custom of driving a flock of sheep through the centre of the village.

Organisers of the event could definitely be accused of woolly thinking but it was all part of their celebrations for National Heritage Weekend.

The sheep ram-paged through Eastham from the smallholding in Ferry Road to St Mary's Church and back again.

Rev Beth Glover, who organised the event, described it as a "truly wonderful sight".

Visitors also got the chance to see a six-foot model of the original church as it appeared 1,500 years ago when the place of worship was made out of wattle and daub.

Inside the church, there was an antiques sale courtesy of Birkenhead-based Amorini Antiques.

An organ recital took place in the church on Sunday with renowned organist Malcolm Perry and guest musicians.

There was also a chance to ring the tolling bell, attempt some brass rubbing and graveyard walks.
