POLICE have branded those who caused trouble at Saturday's derby between Tranmere and Chester as "selfish" and "idiotic".

A "small number" of people were ejected from Prenton Park during Rovers' 2-0 win over Chester City.

This included a man "who encroached onto the playing area" during the game.

All those ejected and arrested will be dealt with at a later date following further enquiries by the police.

Superintendent Richie Davies, from Wirral command team, said: "The majority of Tranmere and Chester fans went to the game to enjoy it for what it was - a football match between two passionate local clubs with a healthy rivalry.

"Sadly a relatively small minority from both sets of spectators seemed intent on confronting each other and officers worked hard with the stewards to identify trouble-makers and remove them from the ground.

"We will be examining the behaviour of several individuals and looking at all the legislation available to us to take firm action against anyone we suspect committed a criminal offence.

"The police will not tolerate the selfish and idiotic actions of a few attempting to spoil a game of football that the vast majority of people went along to enjoy. We will continue to work with Tranmere and visiting clubs to crackdown on any disorder, however small, at any future fixtures. "

Wirral Globe: The police helicopter was seen circling the ground for most of the match.

Following the game, police officers worked with stewards to ensure both sets of supporters left the area around the stadium separately.

During this there were several small outbreaks of disorder which were dealt with by police officers.
