A driver had to be rescued from his car on a flooded Wirral road after torrential downpours this morning.

The rain has caused several road closures; Millhouse Lane in Moreton, Neston Road in Heswall, Arrowe Road in Greasby, Saughall Massie Road in Saughall Massie and Brimstage and Bromborough Roads in Bebington are impassable due to flooding.

Pensby Road has been described as a "swimming pool" with nearby shops also experiencing flooding.

Firefighters were called to a car which surrounded by flood water on Brimstage Road at around 6.40am.

Crews used an inflatable boat to bring the driver to safety.

Watch manager Simon Ashton, who attended the call-out with firefighters from Bromborough, said: “The water was around 1.2 metres deep around the car.

"The water was moving quite a bit and was starting to move the car a little when we arrived. Firefighters in water rescue kit waded out to the man and the Search and Rescue Team brought a boat to bring the man to safety.

“We would advise people take care when driving after it has rained and not to enter flood water on roads as it is difficult to judge how deep the water is.”

The man was unharmed.

There is also surface water on the M53 between J9 for Ellesmere Port and J8 at the A5032 and motorists are being advised to approach with care.

The A552 in Birkenhead is partially partially blocked and queueing traffic due to flooding on the roundabout at Woodchurch.

A Wirral Council spokesman said: "We are working closely with our Highways Services Contractor, BAM Nuttall and focusing our attentions on high priority routes to ensure the roads are opened at the earliest opportunity. However, this may take longer in some cases due to overspill from adjacent watercourses/fields etc."

Marine Lake medical centre in West Kirby has flooded and patients are being advised to attend Arrowe Park Hospital's walk-in unit. The Concourse-based GP practice will remain closed until further notice.

Pensioner John McKenize, 82, has lived at Neston Road for many years and said this is the most severe flooding he has seen there.

He said: “The road and playing fields have been flooded after heavy rain many times over the years, but they have never been as bad as this.”
