A WIRRAL motorcyclist has spoken of his lucky escape when idiotic yobs pushed a shopping trolley into the side of his bike as he drove through Wallasey.

The biker, who asked not to be named, was riding home from work in Neston at around 1.40am on Friday when the incident occurred.

The 20-year-old was travelling along Leasowe Road when someone appeared from under the flyover and pushed the shopping trolley into his path.

He told the Globe: “I was travelling at 40mph and just saw this person, all dressed in black, step out from under the flyover with a shopping trolley. I slowed down thinking maybe they haven’t seen me.

“As I slowed down, they stopped so I carried on but as I was passing, they pushed the trolley right into the side of my bike.

“I was lucky because I was able to keep the bike up but had it been someone who hadn’t been riding for long and just passed their test, they might have come off.”

Although uninjured in the incident, the motorcyclist was left shocked and shaken, and with more than £130 damage to his vehicle.

He said: “What winds me up is that I didn’t do anything wrong, I don’t deserve that, to be targeted like that on my way home from work.

“It’s funny because as I was driving towards Wallasey Village, I said to myself that I wasn’t looking forward to it because I’ve noticed, over the last few weeks since the summer holidays started, there have been gangs of kids hanging around and I hate riding through there at that time of night.

“I understand – I was a teenager and I got into a bit of trouble when I was younger, that’s what happens when you’re a teenager, but I have never put somebody’s life in danger for a laugh.”

Merseyside Police was contacted shortly after the incident but patrols were unable to find those responsible.

“The police said it may have been that they were doing it just for a cheap laugh or they could have wanted me to come off the bike so they could steal it, that’s possible,” added the biker, who has been riding since he was 16.

“This is the first time anything like this has happened to me. You get idiots on the road but you don’t get anything like that.

“I was shocked afterwards. I don’t understand where the motive is for that. I don’t understand where they’re going to get any sort of gratification for doing it.”

By sharing his story, the biker hopes to deter others from carrying out such dangerous acts of antisocial behaviour, as well as finding out who was responsible.

He said: “If this was a young lad which I think it was from what I saw, he will be boasting about this to his mates. Maybe one of them will have a relative who has a bike and will say, ‘Hold on, that’s not on’ and maybe someone will report it.”

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said enquiries are ongoing into the incident.

The culprit is described as being a teenager, around 5ft 6 tall and of medium build, wearing all black with medium to long brown hair.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
