ARROWE Park Hospital's A&E unit was closed off after a major incident involving a patient.

Visitors reported seeing a decontamination unit set up outside the entrance to the department on Sunday afternoon, with a large number of police, ambulances and security also on site.

A spokesman for Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS trust, which runs the hospital, said it could not give out exact details on the incident due to patient confidentiality, but confirmed that the incident involved a single patient.

No other patients or staff were at risk.

The patient arrived at the hospital shortly after 5pm on Sunday with the incident stood down by 8pm.

The spokesman said: "The hospital put in place well-rehearsed plans to deal with a potential incident regarding a patient attending A&E.

"Staff at the hospital responded expertly in line with their training and the trust’s policies and procedures and ensured that no other patients or staff were at risk.

"The incident has now been stood down.

"The trust does not comment on the care of individual patients."
