TRANMERE Rovers' boss Gary Brabin has added to the squad by signing striker Jonathon Margetts on a one-year deal.

The 21-year-old has been on trial at Prenton Park during pre-season and became known as ‘Trialist H’ when finding the net four times in a friendly victory against Vauxhall Motors earlier this month.

Margetts also scored in the 3-1 friendly win over Marine.

He came through the youth ranks at Hull City and was a regular on the scoresheet for their Under-21 side.

He has spent time on loan with Gainsborough Trinity (twice) and Harrogate Town while towards the end of last season, Margetts made a temporary move to League Two side Cambridge United.

Manager Gary Brabin said: "I'm delighted to be able to bring Johnny to the Club. He is a player who has bags of potential.

"He's a proven goalscorer at youth and Under-21 level and now we hope that we can provide him with a good environment to build on that and he can get us some goals to help with what we want to achieve this season."

Margetts said: "I'm delighted to be here. It's a massive club. The current position doesn't do it justice in terms of what league it's in.

"I've been on trial with a few clubs, but I thought Tranmere was the best option for me and I think I have made the right decision.

"Only time will tell, but I'm very happy and I'm enjoying my time here already."

Hours after signing his contract to become a Tranmere player, Margetts scored twice against Everton's Under-21 team as Rovers came from a goal down to win 3-1 and the striker hopes those goals are a sign of things to come.

"That's what my game is all about, scoring goals. Hopefully this year you'll see a lot more of that and I can help to get the club back to where it belongs, which is in the Football League.

"I beat myself up if I don't score in every game; it's the best way to be. I put pressure on myself to score in every game so I'm disappointed if I don't."

Margetts also revealed that a former Rovers loanee, who was a former team-mate at Hull City, had a helping hand in the move.

"I spoke to Will Aimson - he's a good friend of mine and was really unlucky during his time here - and he sold the club to me and was almost pushing me to sign here!" he said.
