A casino in New Brighton has closed its doors after a 30-day redundancy consultation.

Grosvenor Casino in New Brighton closed at 6pm on Sunday.

Rank, which owns the venue, said the club had been losing money.

A spokesman for the group said steps have been taken to relocate the 60 staff at its other casinos.

Wallasey MP Angela Eagle - a vocal supporter of the casino when plans to set up in the resort were unveiled in 2011 - told the Globe: "I'm very sorry to hear about the closure of Grosvenor Casino in New Brighton, which had been an important employer locally.

"At this difficult time, I hope the owners will ensure staff are best supported, and every effort will be made to find alternative employment for them across the Rank Group."

The casino opened within the resort’s successful Marine Point development in May 2012.

Rumours had been circulating that Gala Bingo had expressed an interest in occupying the G Casino site.

But a spokesman for Gala said there was no truth in the rumours, adding: "I can confirm there are absolutely no plans for us to open a Gala Bingo in New Brighton."
