Birkenhead MP Frank Field has today published a full list of summer holiday provision to ensure children across the town can access free ‘food and fun’ every day before they return to school.
The list is aimed at children who usually receive a free school meal during term time but are not able to during the holidays.
The locations include projects set up in Birkenhead, Tranmere, Bidston, and Rock Ferry to fill this gap, with free breakfast clubs, communal cooking and eating courses, physical play sessions with lunch provided, as well as lunchbox distribution sessions.
Mr Field said: “Once again the people of Birkenhead are coming forward to meet and counter some challenging needs in our town, and they are to be saluted for their efforts.
“Thanks to their imagination and hard work we have a plan in place to ensure children can access food and fun, for free, on each day of the Summer Holiday.
“A key task now is to spread the word to friends, relatives and colleagues, to ensure as many parents as possible can take up this help for their children.”
Ending child hunger is a key priority of the Feeding Birkenhead campaign following evidence that the number of families relying on food banks tends to increase during school holidays.
The campaign was set up in December and local organisations were invited to bid for grants.
