BATMAN fans young and old turned out to see the 1960s Batmobile when it returned to Wirral at the weekend.

More than 1,000 came to see the car, driven by Adam West in the cult action comedy series, which was on view to the public on Saturday and Sunday.

It's more than 40 years since the vehicle last appeared at the venue. There was also a Batman fancy dress competition with prizes for the caped crusader's best lookalike.

The weather took a turn for the worse on Sunday, but it did not dampen the spirits of those who turned out to look and at sit in the famous car, including me.

Fort owner Doug Darroch told the Globe: "We had more than 1,000 people in over the whole weekend, which was a great turnout.

"There were a couple of complaints about time spent queuing up, but that’s only to be expected when people are coming to see something like the Batmobile.

"Weather wise the first day was great, but it poured down the second day, which is typical for summer. But it was great to see the Batmobile back in New Brighton."

Adam West and Burt Ward played millionaire Bruce Wayne and his youthful ward Dick Grayson in the series, which ran for 120 episodes from 1966 to 1968.

Each week their alter-egos would rush from the Batcave, hidden deep beneath stately Wayne Manor, to the aid of Commissioner Gordon and chief O’Hara to save Gotham City from a host of colourful criminals set on causing chaos.

Helping our heroes along the way were faithful butler Alfred and, in the final series, Batgirl.

Their many foes included the Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Bookworm, King Tut and Siren.

Among the show's many guest stars were Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Cesar Romero and Joan Collins.
