A GENEROUS donation of pet food has brought joy to a Wirral animal charity that offers shelter to unwanted cats and dogs.

Rock Ferry-based Wirral Animal Welfare Association has been offered a helping hand by Sainsbury’s in Prenton, whose staff and customers donated dog and cat food to the centre.

Numerous trolleys full to the brim of food were collected, which have since been distributed across Wirral to foster homes and the needy.

The charity was formed in 1985 by Jeanette Capper and aims to raise funds to support the welfare and keep of unwanted animals, as well as finding pets their furr-ever or foster homes.

Karen Strahan, treasurer of Wirral Animal Welfare Association, said: “A massive thank you to Sainsbury’s Prenton and all of their customers who have donated dog and cat food, as well as Jo Nugent and Laura Powell who have been excellent as co-ordinators.

In the last 12 months, the charity has helped 77 dogs to find their forever home.

They also undertake vet checks and pay for any required care so that every animal has the best chance of a happy and healthy life.

Karen added: “We are always looking for new foster carers otherwise the dogs have to go into kennels until a home can be found.

“We receive no government funding and rely totally on donations. We are all volunteers and are always looking for more if you have any time. Funds are being stretched at this busy time and we need all the help we can get.”

Karen also thanked Scamps Boarding Kennels for their support, as well as Pets and Home and Law Costings Ltd in Birkenhead.
