CHILDREN at a Wirral school have been given an insight into British democracy as part of a week-long programme aimed at promoting a multi-cultural society.

Wirral South MP Alison McGovern visited Wirral Hospitals’ School on Friday to give a talk about her role as a politician.

It formed part of the school’s International Week, which saw them learn about 13 different countries and their cultures.

Helen O’Loughlin, PSHE lead at the school, said: “We’ve been working closely with MEAS (Wirral’s minority ethnic achievement service) to bring multiculturalism into the classroom.

“We looked at 13 different countries but we wanted to look at Britishness so we asked Alison McGovern to come in and talk to students about her role and British democracy and what it means to be a British citizen.”

Ms McGovern spoke openly about what drove her to become an MP and her passion for improving the life chances of all people in her constituency.

She also led a question and answer session, giving students the opportunity to learn about the life of an MP and the operations of Parliament.

“Our students were highly engaged with Alison’s talk and asked some excellent questions that explored the work of an MP, how democracy works in Britain and how we can all be involved in making a positive change in our society,” added Helen.

Ms McGovern said: “I was asked some great questions about politics and democracy in this country and was shown some very impressive work done by the students at the school. I’d like to thank them for inviting me along to join in with their exploring of different countries and cultures around the world.”
