WIRRAL primary school pupils have energised themselves as part of a campaign aimed at teaching children what to do in power cuts.

Thirty pupils at St Andrews Primary teamed up with SP Energy Networks - which owns and manages the network of cables and power lines for Merseyside - to support the Power Champion Campaign.

The educational initiative aims to encourage children to prepare for power emergency situations.

Year 4 pupils were challenged to work with their classmates and designate a class Power Champion to prepare a checklist of dos and don’ts to help them in the event of a power cut.

With the help of Gareth Freeman, SP Energy Networks engineer, the pupils staged a power cut drill and were given tips on how to stay safe this summer when playing outdoors.

Gareth said: "We’re delighted to work with pupils at St Andrews Primary School to help educate them on how to stay safe in the event of a power cut.

"The children showed great teamwork and initiative to prepare for the power cut drill, which will be help keep them safe in the unlikely event of a power emergency happening. Now they have a checklist for emergencies and know they can call SP Energy Networks for help."

Teacher Charlie Carter said: "It’s important that our children know to stay safe when they’re outside playing during the summer holidays.

"It can be easy to take electricity for granted so when we don’t have it we need to be prepared to know who to seek advice from to get us back on power. It’s fantastic that the children have been given top tips on what to do should they experience a power cut and how to stay safe during the school holidays."
