WIRRAL'S Lewis Pybis will always remember his 20th birthday - for it was the day he was awarded the title Champion Soldier at his Pass Off Parade at the Army Training Regiment.

Lewis was one of 78 fellow recruits that marched onto the parade square on Sunday to mark the end of their phase one training.

He will now go on to join his chosen Army Reserve Regiment, The Queen’s Own Yeomanry.

Lewis who lives in Upton and is studying history at Liverpool Hope University, said: “It seems to be a family tradition to celebrate your birthday when you are doing your basic training.

"My father who was in the Army, but is now in the RAF, also celebrated his birthday in basic training.”

Phase one training saw Lewis immerse himself in Army life for 16 days.

He has learnt everything he needs to know to fulfil his role including military terminology, drill, shooting, physical fitness, weapon handling, first aid, field craft and map reading.

Lewis said: “I’ve been actively involved in the cadets since I was 13 years old, so the next logical step for me was the Reserves.

“I was really flattered to receive the award of Champion Soldier for 4 Troop. Especially when you consider there were some ex-regulars on the course. I feel as though I’ve proved myself.”

The parade was inspected by the Commanding Officer of 167 Catering Support Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Victoria Reid.

Addressing the soldiers on parade, she said: “Today I am reminded of the words of Churchill, that a Reservist is twice the citizen.

“The Army and indeed the nation is so much stronger for the quality of our Army Reserves. By being here today you have achieved so much more than the average person.

“The diversity of the tasks that you will face are as diverse as the people that stand on this parade today. It is that very diversity that will be your strength, and it is our strength, and you have a huge amount to offer."
