Police are appealing for the public’s help after jewellery with a high sentimental value was stolen from a house in Birkenhead.

At around 5.10pm on Monday, a member of the public reported hearing a house alarm and had spotted four men were in the back garden of a property on Cambridge Road.

It was discovered the gang had forced entry to the front of the property and made an untidy search of upstairs bedrooms before leaving at the back of the house.

A gold star medal that had been presented to the victim’s father by the Sudanese football team was taken.

Detective Inspector Paul Parry said: “This item of jewellery is of huge sentimental value to the victims and would be almost impossible to replace.

"I’d like to appeal to the consciences of the offenders and ask them to put themselves in the victims’ position and think how they’d feel if this happened to them.

"I would ask them to do the right thing and find a way to get the stolen items back to their rightful owner.

“We would appeal to anyone who might have witnessed anyone acting suspiciously on or around Waterpark Road in Birkenhead [at the time of the incident] to contact us.

“I’d also ask members of the public to be on the lookout in case they are, or have been, offered this item as a gift or for sale either on the street, in pawnbrokers or in pubs or have seen the item for sale on the internet."

Forensic examinations and house-to house enquiries have been carried out and the investigation is continuing.

The wanted were aged in their early 20s and one was wearing a white baseball cap and grey bomber jacket.

Anyone who has any information should call Wirral CID on 0151 777 2265 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
