The flag outside Wallasey town will flutter a little more proudly this week after mayor Cllr Les Rowlands raised it to mark the start of a series of events to honour Britain's armed forces.

A series of events and celebrations will be held across Merseyside in the run-up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

A combined Liverpool and Merseyside armed forces event will take place on Saturday at the Albert Dock involving serving soldiers, sailors and airmen/women both regular and reserve.

A range of current equipment will be on display including vehicles, weapons and personal protection kit.

The public will be able to talk to armed forces personnel about their experiences while serving Queen and Country.

Councillor Rowlands said: " Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to raise public awareness of the contribution made to out country by those who serve and have served in HM Forces.

"Across the country people are getting involved and Wirral Council is delighted to be able to show support by raising the flag outside the town hall for the week and supporting events locally to mark the occasion."
