WALKERS are being offered the chance to see one of Wirral's most famous natural sites from a different perspective.

Its 70 years since the Hilbre Islands – Little Eye, Middle Eye and Hilbre - were bought by Hoylake Council, a precursor to Wirral Council.

The islands cost £2,500 from their former owners, the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.

To mark the special anniversary, Wirral Sailing Centre is bringing back the popular Hilbre Island Explorer boat trips, where visitors can take to the waves on a natural voyage of discovery, also taking in a view of the Dee Estuary's famous seals.

Liz Gilliver, senior sailing instructor at Wirral Sailing Centre said: "Normally walkers see Hilbre when the tide is out.

"The Explorer boat trip takes us to the far side of Hilbre on the high tide, so passengers can enjoy a very different view of the islands.

"We almost always see seals.

"They are very curious animals and it’s a special experience to see them so close to the boat.

"They are as interested in us as we are in them!

"If we are very lucky we may spot the occasional porpoise and a wonderful range of bird life in the autumn.

"If conditions permit we also take a run down the estuary to Thurstaston.

“This is a unique chance for people to enjoy an exciting ride on our boat, Dee Tour."

Cllr Chris Meaden, cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture said: "The Hilbre Island group is one of Wirral's natural wonders, and tens of thousands of people visit them every year.

"The Explorer offers a different take on the islands.

"People will be able to see the islands when they are at their wildest, and with all of their fabulous wildlife on show."

Children must be eight years or older.
