A GROUP of Girlguiding members from West Kirby met with parliamentarians from across the globe to tell them about the issues that matter to girls and young women.

Young women from Girlguiding Wirral met with representatives of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to explain their views on the workings of the House of Commons and the election.

The Commonwealth agents were visiting Wirral West constituency as part of an election assessment mission to observe and assess the UK’s electoral process.

Representatives including Senator David Smith from Canada and MP Antoni Bezzina from Malta, met with Girlguiding leaders including Skye Thomson, Margaret Saunders and Xanthe Malcolm.

Also at the meeting were Edward McCarth from the House of Lords and Robert Harper from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Girlguiding spokesman Nicky Mulin said: “We discussed what issues are relevant to girls and young women today and whether our MPs appear to listen to and represent us, what we think of women MPs, whether any of the girls had an interest in politics, the election campaign or being an MP in the future.

“Our visitors told us about their careers into politics and some information about the parliamentary systems in Canada and Malta, and how politics is taught in high schools, and how Malta young adults are paid to attend university which we found surprising.”

The charity recently launched a new democracy resource called "Girls Matter, Hear Our Voice" as part of their "Parliament in the Making" programme.
