RAM-raiders stole cash from a Wirral supermarket after reversing a car through the security shutters on the front of the building.

Four workers were cashing up at around 11.15pm on Saturday at the Tesco Express in Mill Park Drive, Eastham, when a black Vauxhall Corsa smashed into the building.

Staff fled into a back room while the thieves drove the car into the metal shutters for a second time, breaking them down and gaining entry to the store.

Three men got out of the car and stole what police have described as a "large quantity of cash" from one of the self-service tills.

The raiders then drove away in the same car, turning onto Eastham Rake, away from the A41 and towards Hooton.

Det Insp Paul Denn, from Wirral CID, said: “This was extremely reckless and dangerous behaviour from the offenders.

“They have given no thought to the innocent members of staff who have been working inside the shop when the car has hit the building.

“Fortunately, their first attempt was unsuccessful and this gave the employees time to get out of the way and to a safer part of the shop."

He added: “Although it was late at night and there were no customers in, the shop itself is on a busy main road in a residential area so I am sure the noise will have attracted many people’s attention.

“It is also near a local pub so people may have been starting their walk or taxi home when it occurred.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who can help us with descriptions of the offenders or any further details about the car.

“We believe it was driven away from Eastham towards Hooton and it will have had considerable damage to it.”

Anyone who saw the car or knows the identities of the thieves should call Wirral CID on 0151 777 2260 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
