EIGHT women are taking part in a marathon walk in memory of a friend who died from breast cancer.

They hope to raise more than £5,000 for other cancer sufferers by completing the Moonwalk – a night-time trek covering 26.2 miles across London.

The team, which includes West Kirby Grammar School’s deputy headteacher, Kirsty Whiteley, will compete as 4Dot.Com in a tribute to Dot Stuart who lost her battle against cancer last May aged 62.

Mrs Stuart, who worked for the NatWest Bank in Heswall and Chester for 45 years, was well known to customers. More than 400 people attended her funeral.

Dot’s husband Mike Stuart said the fundraising efforts of Dot’s friends humbled him.

“Dot took part in the Moonwalk five years ago. She never wanted any fuss during her illness but would have been delighted to see her friends continuing to raise money for others,” he said.

The 4Dot.Com team are Kirsty Whiteley, Chris Robson, Vicky Rigby, Laura Griffiths, Jane Matthews, Sallie Maskrey, Rosemary Evans and Belinda Diamond.

They’ve been preparing for the marathon, on May 16, by trekking hundreds of miles on local footpaths and the Wirral Way.

Mrs Whiteley said: “Dot was a fantastic person. With her as our inspiration there’s no way that we won’t complete the route and hopefully raise lots of money to help others affected by cancer.”

The Moonwalk has become one of the most-loved charity events of the year and brings together both women and men from across the world to raise money for cancer research and treatments.

Walkers all wear t-shirts showing decorated bras in support of breast cancer sufferers but funds are also used to help those with other forms of cancer.

The 4Dot.Com expect to complete the distance in around 8 hours, setting off around 11pm and finishing the route by 7am.
