POLICE were called to a Wirral primary school after a pupil took a suspected wrap of cocaine onto the premises.

The alarm was raised by the headteacher at Our Lady and St Edward's Catholic Primary in Birkenhead on April 24 after a teacher reported a pupil had handed over a small unopened bag of white powder.

The alarm was raised when he told one of his parents about the item as they were picking him up from school. They in turn reported the matter to the school who then informed the police.

Police confirmed that another pupil had found the bag near a local shop a few days before passing it on to a friend.

It had been alleged that the boy had showed fellow pupils how to use the powder. But this has been categorically denied by the school.

No formal action is to be taken against the boy. Headteacher Elaine McGunigall told the Globe: “The safety and wellbeing of our pupils is our primary concern at all times.

"A serious issue was brought to my attention by the parents of one of our pupils last week and the school acted swiftly to deal with this, in line with the assistance and guidance we received from our governors, the local authority and police officers."

Police inspector Georgina Minnery said: “This pupil did the right thing in the end and told an adult about what he had been given.

“These pupils were merely curious about the package that had been found. We would always urge anyone who finds a suspicious item to report that matter to the police immediately.

“The boys and their parents have been spoken to about the matter and there will be no further police action taken in relation to this incident.”
