Tranmere Rovers chairman Mark Palios remains upbeat despite the club's relegation to the Conference Premier.

Rovers' 94-year run in league football came to an end this afternoon when they lost 3-2 away to Plymouth Arglye.

But Palios is determined to steer them towards a swift return to League Two.

"For all of the fans and for myself it feels devastating today," he told Sky Sports News.

"But tomorrow the sun will come up. It's not a disaster tomorrow.

"The fans away today gave me a humbling experience and something that makes me even more determined to make sure we get back as quick as we can."

Tranmere have featured in the Football League since 1921, coming close to securing a place in the Premier League via the playoffs on three occasions and reaching the League Cup final in 2000.

Happiers times: Former Rovers chairman Peter Johnson with Mark and Nicola Palios at Prenton Park last season

The club's second successive relegation comes one week after they parted company with manager Micky Adams "by mutual consent."

Back in August 2014, when Mr Palios and his wife Nicola took over the club from Peter Johnson, he was under no illusions about the job ahead.

The former chief executive of the Football Association, who made more than 280 appearances for Rovers in two spells at Prenton Park, said: " We are both aware of what a privilege it is to have the opportunity to become involved with this club.

“There is a big job to be done to get the club back in the higher divisions and get the facilities back up to scratch. In the coming weeks and months we will share with you our plans on how we intend to make it happen.

“We have no illusions about the difficult environment in which lower league clubs operate but we have exciting ideas to ensure Tranmere thrives in the future as a successful and vibrant community club which is capable of sustaining itself without being reliant on a benefactor.

“My playing days for the club were fantastic, my manager was the legendary and inspiring figure John King and I hope that we can bring some of his spirit, determination and personality back into the club.”
