A man has been charged with possessing an imitation firearm following a disturbance in Hoylake on Sunday afternoon.

It is understood the incident occurred as Labour Party volunteers were out canvassing on behalf of candidate Margaret Greenwood.

Householders around Berwyn Avenue said they were asked to stay away from their homes while police secured the area.

Wayne Hudson, a 55-year-old Hoylake man, was arrested and later charged with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

He has been released on conditional bail until an appearance before magistrates on April 30.

One local resident who asked not to be named said: "There were over half a dozen police cars and vans in attendance and with this being a cul-de-sac, it obviously attracted a lot of attention.

"Police blocked off the road for a while and it was at least 90 minutes or more before everything returned to normal."

Correction: An earlier version of this story said the canvassers were from the Tory Party.
