WIRRAL residents are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote ahead of this year’s General Election.

Voters will go to the polls on May 7 to elect an MP for Wirral’s four constituencies – Birkenhead, Wallasey, Wirral South and Wirral West. Local elections also take place on the same day.

With just over a month to go, the Electoral Commission is reminding people to register by April 20.

Wirral voters are also being reminded that if voting in person at their local polling station is not convenient, they can choose to vote by post.

Anyone on the electoral register can apply for a postal vote.

It will be sent directly to you before the day of the election and can be sent to your home address or any other address of your choice.

However, if you want it sent to an address abroad, you would need to consider whether there will be enough time to receive and return your ballot paper by election day.

Only the person the postal vote is addressed to can complete the ballot paper.

When you receive your postal vote, you will need to provide your date of birth and signature on the postal vote statement that is returned along with your marked ballot paper.

These ‘identifiers’ will be crosschecked against your application form.

To request a postal vote application download the postal vote application form from Wirral Council’s website or call 0151 691 8046.

The deadline for applications for postal votes for the 2015 Local and Parliamentary elections is 5pm on Tuesday, April 21.

If you don’t send your postal vote back in time, you can still return it to your polling station by, 10pm on May 7.

If you lose your papers or make a mistake, you can collect new ballot papers from Wallasey Town Hall.

This can be done from April 30 until 5pm on polling day.
