Glamorous Past Of Airport On Show

January 10, 2001 10:31: Airport House, Purley Way, is keeping the history of aviation alive with its heritage exhibition.

The exhibition is open to the public on the first Sunday of the month and gives visitors the chance to step back in time and witness the world of Airport House in its heyday in the 1930s.

The airport used to be Londons official point of entry or departure for all international flights, and was glamorised by famous aviators including Charles Lindbergh who flew into Croydon in 1927 after completing the first solo trans-Atlantic flight. Admission is free for visitors to Airport House, who can see archives of old air tickets, timetables, and a photographic history of the airports development.

Also on display is a flight bag belonging to Amy Johnson who in 1930 became the first woman to fly solo from Croydon to Australia. Opening times are 11am-4-pm.

Further details on opening arrangements are available from the Croydon Tourist Information Centre on 020 8253 1009.
