AFC WIMBLEDON..............1

A DRAW against AFC Wimbledon was not enough to keep Tranmere Rovers out of the League Two relegation places.

George Green struck an exceptional 94th minute debut goal to give the home side a share of the spoils.

But they were leapfrogged by Hartlepool - with former Rovers boss Ronnie Moore at the helm - after the Pools'  2-1 victory over Cambridge Utd.

Manager Micky Adams made three changes from the side which started against Burton Albion last weekend.

Peter Brezovan was recalled from his loan at Southport to start in goal, Steve Jennings returned after suspension while Green made his debut after his loan move from Everton.

His late strike cancelled out a first-half deflected goal from Adebayo Akinfenwa which had given The Dons the lead on 29 minutes.

Tranmere had a couple of chances as the half drew to its close with Kayode Odejayi's shot blocked while Ihiekwe's cross from the right found Janoi Donacien, but the Dons' defence scrambled it away as they went in 1-0 up at the break.

On Thursday, co-owner Mark Palios praised the "incredible efforts" of everyone at the club and thanked fans for their support through what had been a "torrid season."

He said: "There are eight games to go; eight jobs to do; eight fights to win and if we win four of them, we should be safe.

"If we don't, I don’t need to spell out the consequences.

“None of us want that to happen and that is why I am putting out a rallying cry to get everyone behind the club in this crucial period.

"We are in a fight and continuing to give wholehearted support is key to securing the club’s future in the league."
