HUNDREDS of people had a chance to voice concerns over plans for building a nursing home on the site of a former Wirral pub during a packed public meeting.

The one-time Pensby Hotel, in Pensby is currently under consideration as the site for a new care home for older people.

The redevelopment plan, which includes demolishing the existing building in Pensby Road, was outlined by the developer LNT Construction during meeting at St Michael and All Angels Church in Pensby on Thursday, attended by more than 200 people.

The scheme will now be considered by members of the council's planning committee on a date to be confirmed.

Thursday's meeting was organised and chaired by Pensby and Thingwall Labour councillor Phillip Brightmore, who collected a petition of more than 200 signatures, calling on the council to reject the proposal.

He told the Globe: "I called this community meeting so that residents' voices could be heard.

"The turnout was fantastic and local residents who joined me, stressed their concerns over insufficient parking, increased congestion, and the cruel loss of a once valued neighbourhood amenity.

"But most of all they expressed shock and distress over the proposal to demolish this iconic building.

"When The Pensby Hotel was open it certainly had issues that impacted unfairly on those living closest to the pub, and it is absolutely right that any future plans address those issues. But the fact remains, The Pensby Hotel is an iconic part of the local community".
