IT was more of an author hunt than a bear hunt for one Wirral school this week when they welcomed the man behind of the most enduring children’s books of recent years.

Former children’s laureate Michael Rosen – famous for writing We’re Going on a Bear Hunt – was at St George’s Primary School in Wallasey today, where he performed for 860 children throughout the day.

Renowned for his work as a poet, performer, broadcaster and scriptwriter, Michael has been involved in the publication of more than 140 books, including the much-loved 1989 classic.

He has spent much of his career visiting schools with his one-man show to enthuse children with his passion for books and poetry, treating pupils to highly engaging, exuberant and hilarious performances.

Wednesday’s visit to St George’s was no different, with children, teachers and parents alike all notably inspired by his words.

Teacher Juliet Francis said: “We have been really lucky to secure the visit from such a well known author partially due to the size of our school.

“Making sure that every child is a reader and instilling a true love of books and reading for pleasure is of great importance to us at St George’s.

“As part of our vibrant creative curriculum, we regularly invite authors, artists and performers into school to enhance the learning experience.”

Headteacher Gareth Elswood said: “We have been looking forward to Michael’s visit for 12 months. We have been preparing for his arrival, we have been reading his books and watching his videos.

“We’ve had a number of authors but he’s the biggest name we have had - he has inspired the children and hopefully will inspire the staff too.”

Throughout the day Michael performed for all children from F2 to Year 6 and signed books, giving children the chance to have a personalised memory of what proved to be a fantastic day.

10-year-old Eva Padmore added: “He was very funny and very interesting. I’ve been reading his books since I was little.”
