A scheme to raise standards for privately rented properties in Wirral is to be introduced in parts of Birkenhead and Wallasey.

Wirral Council has approved the "selective licensing" proposals, which were subject to extensive consultation with more than 20,000 residents, landlords and agents invited to participate.

It will require landlords who privately rent-out properties in the designated areas to obtain a license from the local authority.

They will need to show basic safety checks have been carried out and they have appropriate management arrangements in place.

It is a criminal offence to let a privately rented property in the designated area without a license, or to fail to comply with any of the conditions.

The scheme will come into force in four areas; Egerton North, Birkenhead South, Seacombe Library and Egremont Promenade South.

Councillor George Davies, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, housing and engagement, said: “Tenants renting private accommodation have the right to expect safe, well-managed homes and this scheme will help to deliver that and help to increase demand for housing in these areas.

"There are a lot of good private landlords in Wirral who recognise their responsibilities to their tenants, but we need to do more to deal with those who don’t.”

The scheme will come into effect on July 1, and will last for five years.

Landlords and managing agents can email the council at selectivelicensing@wirral.gov.uk to see if their property is affected.

Those who apply between July 1 and September 30 will receive a discount to the license fee.
