STARGAZERS are being invited to an evening of astronomy at a Wirral park this weekend.

The Liverpool Astronomical Society will be welcoming the public to a stargazing event on Saturday, March 28, at the visitor centre at Wirral Country Park, in Thurstaston.

Starting at 7pm, members of the society will have their telescopes set up and trained on the skies, along with refreshments and displays, as well as an illustrated tlak in the lecture theatre.

The event is free to attend, and will be filmed by the BBC for their ‘Stargazing’ series, to be broadcast on BBC Two and presented by Professor Brian Cox and Dara O'Briain.

Wirral Council coastal ranger Dave Stevenson has supported this event for several years.

He said: "My advice to anyone hoping to come along on the night is to check the weather forecast first.

"If it’s raining or cloudy we aren’t going to see much and if it is a clear night then be prepared for it to be very busy as the popular event can attract several hundred people.

“There won’t be any lights showing the way to the Visitor Centre from the Car Park, so along with warm clothing and suitable footwear a torch is also essential.”

Attendees are invited to bring their own telescope, if they have one, and society members will be on hand to show the best way to set it up to get the most of your equipment.

The event comes a week after Wirral was plunged into darkness when the first near-total solar eclipse visible in the UK for 16 years.
