VETERAN Birkenhead MP Frank Field has returned to the House of Commons just days after he was rushed to hospital having collapsed in a public meeting.

The 72-year-old black-out following a heated row with some members of the audience on Friday evening.

Paramedics treated the unconscious MP for around 30 minutes before he was taken by ambulance to Broadgreen Heart and Chest Hospital in Liverpool.

The meeting at Highfield Church in Rock Ferry was abandoned and members of the public asked to leave.

Mr Field returned to the House of Commons today, Tuesday, during a debate on the Modern Slavery Bill.

In his contribution to the debate, Mr Field called on MPs on all sides of the House to ensure the Modern Slavery Bill would be signed into law before the general election.

He also argued that the next government should initiate an inquiry into the workings of the new legislation and base any necessary improvements upon its findings.

Speaking from hospital on Monday morning, Mr Field told the Globe he believes the meeting, called to discuss the future of former Rock Ferry High School and the proposed sell-off associated fields, had been "infiltrated" by political agitators.

"I've not witnessed this level of abuse since the old days of the Trotskyist Militant Tendency infiltrating the Labour Party," he said.

"The screaming and shouting by a small number of people was shocking - so bad in fact that the police were called. Several people were asked to leave.

"It was pure political thuggery from an era I had thought - and hoped - was long gone."
