A WIRRAL dad was left lying in the middle of the road while his three-month-old daughter sat crying in his car after he was involved in a hit and run in Prenton.

Stephen Graham was about to get into his Ford Fiesta on Shrewsbury Road when he was hit from behind by what he believes was a silver Peugeot 206, sending him flying through the air.

Despite suffering a broken leg, the 32-year-old from Bromborough had only one thing on his mind – checking his three-month-old daughter Jessica was ok.

But after pulling himself to his feet, the Peugeot’s driver – who had initially stopped to see if he was ok – got back into her car and drove off “at speed”.

Stephen, who works at Tulip in Bromborough, said: “I told her that I thought I had broken something, my foot or my leg, and I told her my three-month-old baby was in the car and I needed to check on her, but when I turned back around, she was driving off at speed.

“She actually admitted that she didn’t see me. The driver’s door was open a couple of inches and I was about to get into the car when I felt a bang from behind – she sent me flying a good six to eight feet.”

Stephen had expected to exchange details with the driver once he had checked on Jessica but was shocked to see her leaving the scene of the collision.

“As soon as I mentioned the baby she drove off,” said Stephen, who has been signed off work for three months.

“I just didn’t think to get the registration at the time because I thought she was still going to be there when I had checked on the baby.”

Merseyside Police is currently investigating the hit and run – which happened at around 10.15am on March 2 – but with no CCTV, Stephen has had to resort to social media for information.

“I’ve had quite a few comments on Facebook about cars being damaged,” he explained.

“There was actually another person in a car across the road but they just drove off – no one bothered to stop to help.

“Someone must have seen something. Any information would be better than none at the moment because I just don’t think she should get away with it.”

Stephen suffered a fractured tibia in the collision but believes he has been lucky.

He told the Globe: “Because of the adrenaline rush I actually drove home to Bromborough with a broken leg because the baby was in hysterics and I just wanted to get her back to her mum.

“If I’d had the car door open fully, it would have been different – I would have been dead because she would have squashed me against the car.”

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “The female driver initially stopped at the scene but later drove off. She is described as white, aged 35 to 40 years, of slim build, with a tanned complexion and long blonde hair. She spoke with a local accent.

“An investigation into the full circumstances of the incident is continuing.”
