Diversions are in place at Laird Street in Birkenhead as police investigate reports of a man carrying what is believed to be a firearm at an address near St James' Church.
The alarm was sounded at around 6.30am today.
There is a large police presence in the area and rush-hour traffic is being diverted down Corpoaration Road.
A police spokesman said a "containment operation" is underway and a block of flats is being searched.
Armed officers are at the scene.
