TWO of television’s biggest names in pro-wrestling will enter the squared circle at Swindon MECA this summer in two 4 Front Wrestling (4FW) bouts.

Promoter David Sharp has just watched the ink dry on contracts which will bring former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstars Rey Mysterio and Alberto Del Rio to Wiltshire.

Each of the athletes have spent time at the top of WWE, a global brand which broadcasts events to 36m viewers in more than 150 countries, for much of the last decade.

Now considered free agents after their respective WWE contracts expired, Mysterio and Del Rio have been listed in main events at MECA on July 19 and May 23 respectively.

David, 33, of Dydale Road in Taw Hill, has had a wrestling career of his own in the UK and now helps to train athletes at 4FW, as well as organise events. Mysterio, real name Oscar Gutierrez, performed for WWE from 2002 until last month, and will be in the UK for London Film & Comic Con from July 17, when David saw an opportunity to bring him to Swindon.

“It won’t get much bigger than that. You won’t get a bigger name coming to Swindon in wrestling,” said David.

“He’s an absolutely massive star. If you know wrestling, you will know how big of a deal it is.

“If you don’t know, with a bit of research you will find anything you need to online.”

When David released the news he had captured Mysterio in a five-figure deal, 4FW’s website crashed and the update attracted 150,000 views on Facebook.

Those with the most expensive tickets will also have the opportunity to attend a meet-and-greet with the American-Mexican talent.

An opponent is yet to be finalised for the 40-year-old in the six-bout event, but David is working on another international name with the pedigree to cause Mysterio some problems.

“It will mean everything. I didn’t have opportunities like this when I was younger,” he said.

“This is something that won’t happen again.

“It’s overwhelming. My little boy is six and he loves Rey Mysterio.”

Del Rio will grapple with English professional Doug Williams, who is best-known for his work in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA).

“We normally do this once a year on a big anniversary show, but to have these within a few months is not easy,” said David.

“There have been a lot of e-mails back and forth, a lot of contracts.”

At the Del Rio showcase, two children will be allowed free entry with every paying adult.
