DEFEAT against Wycombe Wanderers has left Tranmere Rovers one spot above the League Two relegation places.

Manager Micky Adams was frustrated to see his side slip 1-2 against the promotion chasers on Tuesday night.

But he said he is determined to battle on "to save this football club."

The result left Tranmere one spot above the relegation zone, equal on points with 23rd-placed Cheltenham.

All the goals came in the first 45 minutes with Paul Hayes opening the scoring for Wycombe from the penalty spot.

Rovers striker Jordan Hugill levelled on his home debut, but Fred Onyedinma's 40th minute strike turned out to be the winner for the visitors.

Wanderers forward Matt McClure was sent off 70 seconds after coming on as a substitute.

McClure saw red in the 68th minute for appearing to hit Adam Dugdale as they challenged for a header.

Adams said he was disappointed with the way Rovers started: "I thought in the first 15, 20 minutes we were very apprehensive and once they'd got the penalty, which was a bit harsh, we came out of our shell.

"We got them on the back foot, got some decent balls in the box and got our goal. Then we looked to be in the ascendancy but one clearance and we've not dealt with it.

"We can't keep giving teams starts like we're giving them. We're chasing another game.

"They managed the game out like we should have done at Portsmouth. Ten men, they silenced the crowd and we gave too many cheap free kicks away.

"But we still had chances, we had one cleared off the line and Danny Gardner had a shot saved."

Adams continued: "It's another defeat. We've got 12 games to go and it's going to go right down to the wire I'm afraid and we've just got to pick ourselves up and move on."

He added: "We all expect better.

"My chairman expects better, the fans deserve better and I can promise them I'm going to be fighting until the end.

"It's a tough situation at this moment in time and what it needs is for somebody to be brave and stand there and I'm going to be that man.

"I'm going to battle to save this football club."
