WIRRAL’S women are being encouraged to get on their bikes to celebrate all things female as part of International Women’s Day.

Sustrans are holding a cycle-themed event in Birkenhead Park to celebrate the often unsung achievements of active women.

After the event – which takes place on Saturday, March 7 – members of the public are invited to take part in a bicycle themed treasure hunt and decorate their bikes with Sustrans bling bike stall.

The cycling treasure hunt starts at 2pm, and is open to people of all ages and abilities.

Those who bring their bike along to the event will also benefit from help from a female mechanic who will be checking bikes and making repairs for free.

Sustrans officer Pasha Hudson said: “People often have bikes in their sheds gathering rust which need a bit of love – that can often be a bit of a barrier so there will be a mechanic on site for those people.”

The event starts at 11am and ends at 3.30pm and will also feature a pedal-powered smoothie maker and music provided by the Ukulele duo the Mersey Belles.

Sustrans works with communities, policy-makers and partner organisations all over the UK to help people choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys to allow them to enjoy better, safer spaces where they live.

Pasha added: “Sustrans are holding an all singing all dancing event to mark the, often unsung, achievements of active women.

“Whether you have won an Olympic medal or are 180 and are still determined to learn to ride two wheels this event is for you.

“No bike? No problem. We have plenty you can borrow – from the classic upright to the more unusual; we have something to meet the needs of ladies everywhere.”

The Women on Wheels event takes place at Birkenhead Visitors Centre from 11am on Saturday, March 7.

It will culminate in an organised bike ride at 2pm.
