A WIRRAL soldier and civilian have teamed up to kayak 200 miles in two days in the hope of raising money for a charity close to their hearts.

Lance Corporal Simon Parker, from Moreton, will be joined by volunteer and ex-lifeboat crew member Mel Pengelly, from West Kirby, when they peddle the ‘Cheshire Ring’ canal system later this month in aid of The Soldiers’ Charity.

They will set off from Ashton-under-Lyne on February 28, travelling via Runcorn, Congleton and Marple – twice – before concluding on March 1.

Army chef Simon said: “Mel has over 20 years of experience on the water and is a vital part of the team – he will be using his experience to help support us in water safety throughout the challenge.”

Simon, who serves with 4 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) (60 Squadron), based in Oxfordshire, will be joined by two of his Army military colleagues.

Private Mason Holmes, an Army chef from Wolverhampton attached to 19 Royal Artillery in Tidworth, and Private Mike Amanis, from Crewe - who also serves with 4 Regiment RLC as a storeman.

They will be by aided by 12-strong team of support staff From 60 Sqn 4 Regiment RLC.

The group aims to raise £1,500 for the charity.

Simon added: “Local companies have been great and have supported us, though they’ve been quick to tell us how hard it’s going to be.

“I’d like to take this time to thank them, from all the team at Paddling Warrior.

“Without the support of the local community and companies we would not be where we are now.”
