MERSEYRAIL has apologised to commuters after trains were seriously disrupted by 'frozen snow' this morning.

Train services have now resumed following major disruptions at Southport, Kirby, Hunts Cross, Ellesmere Port and Chester.

There were also delays on the Ellesmere Port to Hooton line.

Merseyrail has said it will look into the incidents to ensure lessons are learned to prevent it happening again.

In a statement, the organisation said: "At this time of year, when there is snow and ice, we need to treat the rails overnight to ensure that they are in good condition for the start of service the following day.

"While most lines were managed correctly last night, for a variety of reasons, we were unable to treat all of them − one is that essential maintenance work was taking place in some areas of the network.

"We are now undertaking a review of this morning’s events, to ensure that vital lessons are learned.

"We apologise to our customers for this.

"We encourage anyone who was affected to contact us at comment@merseyrail.org
